African Daisy
Gerbera jamesonii · Asteraceae
How it looks
African Daisy (Gerbera) bears large daisy-shaped flowers with a yellow or black center and long, slender petals spread in a circle. Red, pink, yellow, orange, and white are common, with blooms about 2-6 in (5-15 cm) across. The leaves are deeply divided, deep-green basal foliage.
African Daisy has no known toxicity to cats. It's a popular cut flower at florists that you can feel at ease about.
Guide for parents
African Daisy comes in many colors and has long stems, making it a bouquet regular. It's a safe cut flower, but it's often treated with florist preservatives, so don't let your cat drink the vase water. The stems bend easily and the flowers drop readily, so clear fallen petals the same day. If you grow it in a pot, a sunny windowsill is ideal, and the right approach is to water it thoroughly once the soil surface has dried out.
