Alyssum
Alyssum spp. · Brassicaceae
How it looks
Alyssum is a herbaceous plant whose small four-petaled white, pink, or purple flowers gather densely into small clusters at the branch tips. The leaves are narrow, slender, and gray-green. It stands 4–12 in (10–30 cm) tall, spreads sideways, is lightly fragrant, and is common in gardens.
The ASPCA lists alyssum as non-toxic to cats at the genus level (Alyssum spp.). What is sold as alyssum in Korea, sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima), is the same plant that was long known as Alyssum maritimum, so it falls within what that listing refers to. Taxonomists now place it in a separate genus, Lobularia, but that does not change which plant the non-toxic finding covers.
Guide for parents
Alyssum is covered by the ASPCA's genus-level non-toxic listing for Alyssum. The sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima) sold here for beds and pots is the same plant that was known for a long time as Alyssum maritimum, so even though it now sits in a different genus, it is the plant that listing was made about. NC State Extension also marks this species as non-toxic for cats.
Even with a safe plant, make a habit of picking up fallen leaves the same day.
If your cat likes to dig in or eat potting soil, fertilizer ingredients can upset their stomach — covering the soil with pebbles works well.
If it comes home as a cut stem, florists often treat it with preservatives, so place the vase where your cat can't drink the water.
