Celosia Spicata
Celosia spicata · Amaranthaceae
How it looks
Celosia (spicata) is a herb whose slender spike-shaped flower clusters rise straight up in deep pink, purple, and white. The leaves are narrow, long, and oval; height 12-31 in (30-80 cm), popular as a cut flower and dried flower.
Celosia Spicata is listed as non-toxic to cats by the ASPCA. An occasional nibble is unlikely to cause any real trouble.
Guide for parents
This page covers Celosia spicata, the species the ASPCA lists as non-toxic to cats. What is sold in Korea as love-lies-bleeding belongs to a different genus altogether (Amaranthus caudatus), and we keep a separate page for it. The two names get used interchangeably, so the botanical name is the reliable way to tell which one you have.
Even with a safe plant, make a habit of picking up fallen leaves the same day.
If your cat likes to dig in or eat potting soil, fertilizer ingredients can upset their stomach — covering the soil with pebbles works well.
If it comes home as a cut stem, florists often treat it with preservatives, so place the vase where your cat can't drink the water.
