Grape Hyacinth
Muscari armeniacum · Asparagaceae
How it looks
Muscari (Grape Hyacinth) is a small bulb plant with small purple to blue bell-shaped flowers densely hanging like a grape cluster at the tip of a slender flower stalk. The leaves are narrow, fine, and grey-green, and it reaches 6-10 in (15-25 cm) tall, blooming in spring.
Grape Hyacinth (Grape Hyacinth) has no known toxicity to cats. It looks and sounds like spring hyacinth (whose bulbs are risky), so use the scientific name (Muscari) to tell them apart.
Guide for parents
A small flower that usually comes home as dried stems or spring cut flowers. It's a safe plant. It looks a lot like true hyacinth (Hyacinthus), but Grape Hyacinth is safe while hyacinth is a caution-level plant — checking the label at purchase is recommended. As a cut flower, the vase water may contain preservative, so use a lidded vase so your cat can't drink from it.
