Pampas Grass
Cortaderia selloana · Poaceae
How it looks
Pampas Grass is a large grass with very long, narrow sword-shaped leaves that grow in big clumps from the base; in autumn, large feathery white to pink plumes rise on very tall flower stalks (6.5-10 ft / 2-3 m). The leaf margins are saw-like and rough.
Pampas Grass has no known toxicity to cats. It's a tall grass popular in dried-flower decor.
Guide for parents
A safe plant, but the leaf edges are blade-sharp and can cut even people. Choose its spot with care. When displayed dried, the fluffy tufts that drop won't lead to serious trouble even if your cat plays with and swallows some. The cut edges are sharp, so wear gloves when trimming. A corner away from your cat's usual paths is the safest spot.
