Yellow Oleander

Thevetia peruviana · Apocynaceae

How it looks

Yellow Oleander is a shrub or small tree of the dogbane family that produces yellow funnel-shaped flowers. The leaves are narrow, long, and glossy dark green, and at 10-33 ft (3-10 m) tall it grows outdoors. Cutting the stem releases a white latex.

Deadly — cardiac arrest

All parts of Yellow Oleander contain cardiac glycosides; even a small amount can cause arrhythmias, vomiting, and depression, and in serious cases this can progress to cardiac arrest.

If ingested

Contact your nearest vet immediately

Onset
2–6 hours after ingestion
Symptoms
Cardiac arrhythmia, vomiting, diarrhea
Action
Go to an animal hospital immediately. Don't wait, even if symptoms seem mild.

Guide for parents

Yellow oleander is sometimes planted as a garden or ornamental shrub for its bright yellow funnel-shaped flowers, but never bring it into a space where a cat lives. It's a dogbane-family plant whose entire body holds powerful cardiac glycosides — swallowing even a little of a leaf or seed can cause an irregular heartbeat and, as it advances, cardiac arrest.

Plants in the same family

Yellow oleander sits alongside oleander and desert rose in the dogbane family, and all of them share cardiac glycosides that attack the heart directly. The look and name differ, but the risk is the same, so keep every plant in this group out of your cat's space regardless of the variety.

How cats get exposed

The leaves, flowers, stems, and roots are all dangerous — and so are the seeds and any vase water a cut branch has stood in. The seeds are especially potent, so clear fallen fruit the same day. Don't leave cut branches sitting out or in a vase, keep the white sap off skin and fur, and if it's in the yard, fully separate it from your cat's paths.

How symptoms progress

Cardiac glycosides disrupt the heart's electrical signals. Signs usually begin within 2–6 hours with vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy, but the heart trouble — a slow or irregular pulse — can surface late. A cat that looked fine early on can collapse suddenly, so the absence of symptoms is not reassurance.

What to do right now

If you suspect ingestion, go to a 24-hour emergency vet immediately even before any symptoms. Do not induce vomiting at home, and tell the vet what and how much was eaten. With cardiac toxins, the window for treatment is very short.
