Lily

Lilium species · Liliaceae

How it looks

Lilies are strongly fragrant flowers with six large petals that open into a trumpet shape. Colors range from white to pink to yellow, often with dark speckles inside the petals and long, protruding yellow anthers (the pollen). The leaves are narrow and sword-shaped, arranged around the stem.

Deadly — kidney failure from tiny amounts

True lilies are among the most dangerous plants for cats. Eating a single petal — or even a grain of pollen — can cause acute kidney failure within 24 hours.

If ingested

Contact your nearest vet immediately

Onset
6–12 hours after ingestion (vomiting comes first)
Symptoms
Vomiting, inappetence, kidney failure, death
Action
Go to a 24-hour animal hospital immediately. Every hour counts.

Guide for parents

If you live with a cat, lilies are one plant you should never bring into your home. Even a single petal or a few grains of pollen can trigger acute kidney failure within 24 hours, and the most common accident is a bouquet gift with a lily or two tucked inside.

Which lilies are dangerous

The lilies that cause acute kidney failure in cats are true lilies (genus Lilium) and daylilies. By contrast, common houseplants like the peace lily or calla lily are lilies in name only — they belong to entirely different groups and cause mouth irritation and drooling, not kidney failure. The type of risk is completely different, so first confirm which one you actually have.

How cats get exposed

Leaves, flowers, and pollen are all toxic — and so is the vase water. A cat can be poisoned simply by brushing against the flower and later grooming the pollen off its fur, so keeping the plant up high is not enough to stay safe.

How symptoms progress

Signs usually begin 6–12 hours after ingestion with vomiting, drooling, and lethargy. The dangerous part comes next: between 12 and 24 hours there is often a "false recovery" window where the cat seems better, while kidney damage quietly progresses. By 24–72 hours, urine output drops sharply and kidney failure becomes visible — and at that stage it is very hard to reverse.

What to do right now

If there is any chance your cat touched or ate a lily, do not wait even if it still looks fine. Do not try to induce vomiting at home — get to a 24-hour emergency vet immediately. Starting IV fluid therapy within 6 hours dramatically improves the chances of protecting the kidneys, and every hour of delay worsens the outlook. With lily poisoning, how fast treatment starts is what decides survival.

Safer flowers instead

If you want flowers in a home with a cat, roses and gerbera daisies are confirmed safe alternatives.
