Asian Lily

Lilium asiatica · Liliaceae

How it looks

Asian Lily is a lily cultivar marked by upward-facing, fully open flowers. It comes in white, pink, yellow, orange, red, and more, with deep spots on the petals and almost no scent. The leaves are narrow, long, and sword-shaped, and it grows upright to 24–47 in (60–120 cm) tall.

Deadly — kidney failure from a small amount

Asian Lily is a bouquet regular, but for cats it is one of the most dangerous plants there is. Petals, pollen, and even vase water can all cause kidney failure.

If ingested

Contact your nearest vet immediately

Onset
6–24 hours after ingestion (symptoms may be delayed)
Symptoms
Vomiting, inappetence, kidney failure, death
Action
Go to a 24-hour animal hospital immediately. Don't wait, even if there are no symptoms.

Guide for parents

Asian lilies are the lilies most often tucked into bouquets and arrangements, and they are among the most dangerous plants for a cat. A single petal or a few grains of pollen can trigger acute kidney failure, so the rule is simple: don't bring them into a home with a cat.

It's a true lily, so it's deadly

Asian lilies belong to the true lily genus (Lilium) that causes kidney failure. They carry exactly the same risk as the lily, the Easter lily, and the daylily. By contrast, the peace lily is a lily in name only — it causes mouth irritation, not kidney failure — so first confirm which one you have.

How cats get exposed

Petals, leaves, and pollen are all toxic, and so is the vase water. A cat can be poisoned just by brushing against the flower and later grooming pollen from its fur, so setting it up high is not enough. The most common accident is a single stem hidden in a gift bouquet.

How symptoms progress

Signs usually begin 6–12 hours after ingestion with vomiting, drooling, and loss of appetite. Then comes a "false recovery" window where the cat seems better while kidney damage quietly advances. By 24–72 hours, urine output drops sharply and kidney failure becomes visible — and by then it is very hard to reverse.

What to do right now

If there's any chance your cat touched or ate it, don't wait even if it looks fine. Don't induce vomiting at home — get to a 24-hour emergency vet immediately. Starting IV fluids within 6 hours of exposure greatly improves the chance of protecting the kidneys.

Safer flowers instead

If you want flowers in a home with a cat, switch to confirmed-safe roses or gerbera daisies.
