Orange Day Lily

Hemerocallis graminea · Asphodelaceae

How it looks

The orange day lily is a perennial with narrow, long sword-shaped leaves growing in a clump from the base and six-petaled trumpet-shaped orange flowers at the tip of the flower stalk. A single bloom lasts only one day, but a new flower opens each day. Height 2 ft to 3 ft (60–100 cm).

Deadly — kidney failure

Orange Day Lily belongs to the same genus as daylilies (Hemerocallis) and causes severe kidney failure in cats. Petals, leaves, and pollen are all deadly.

Contact your nearest vet immediately

Onset
6–24 hours after ingestion (symptoms may be delayed)
Symptoms
Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy
Action
Go to a 24-hour animal hospital immediately. Don't wait, even if there are no symptoms.

Guide for parents

Orange daylily is in the same genus as the common daylily (Hemerocallis), and it causes acute kidney failure in cats. It's a familiar sight in gardens and along roadsides, but despite the friendly name its danger is no different from that of a true lily.

Part of the daylily group

Orange daylily is in the same Hemerocallis genus as the common daylily and belongs, along with true lilies, to the group that genuinely causes kidney failure in cats. A lily-in-name-only plant like the peace lily poses a completely different kind of risk, so confirm which one you have first.

How cats get exposed

The petals, leaves, and pollen are all dangerous. A cat commonly chews a clump growing in a garden bed, or grooms pollen off its fur after touching cut blooms. Water the flowers have stood in isn't safe either.

How symptoms progress

Signs usually begin 6–24 hours after ingestion with vomiting, loss of appetite, and lethargy. After a window where the cat seems better, kidney damage quietly advances; by the time urine output drops sharply and kidney failure shows, it's very hard to treat.

What to do right now

If there's any chance your cat touched or ate it, don't wait even without symptoms. Don't induce vomiting at home — get to a 24-hour emergency vet immediately. The earlier IV fluids begin, the better the odds of protecting the kidneys.

Safer flowers instead

If you want a bloom in a similar color, confirmed-safe gerbera daisies or roses are good choices.
